Work Song by Hozier: The Meaning Behind the Song

A love song in which the singer promises that being buried will not stop him. It borrows its shape from American prison and field songs, its chorus from a spiritual about resurrection, and its title appears nowhere in the lyric.

Devotion taken past its logical end point. The narrator is so consumed by the woman he loves that he can barely eat, and the chorus instructs whoever is listening to bury him gently, because no grave is going to hold him and he intends to crawl home to her regardless.

The Story Behind the Song

Andrew Hozier-Byrne wrote it alone and recorded it in 2013 for his self-titled debut album, released in 2014 on Rubyworks and Island. Rob Kirwan co-produced with him, as he had on “Take Me to Church.”

The album came out of a period when Hozier was unknown and working in his parents’ attic in County Wicklow. By the time this track was released as a single, on March 16, 2015, he had been nominated for song of the year at the Grammy Awards and was one of the most visible new artists in the world.

Taylor Swift had endorsed it publicly in August 2014, before most of that happened, calling it the perfect song in a message to a friend. That was several months before the album broke in America.

Why is it called Work Song?

Because of the form rather than the subject. American work songs were sung by people doing hard physical labour, in fields and on chain gangs, built on call and response and a rhythm that matched the swing of a tool. Hozier’s arrangement takes that shape: hand claps, a heavy bass line, gospel backing voices answering the lead.

The title never appears in the lyric, the only track on the album where that is true. It is a label for the machinery rather than a line from the song, which is a fairly unusual choice and tells you where the writer’s attention was.

Where does the chorus come from?

From the tradition around “Ain’t No Grave,” an American spiritual about the dead rising, most familiar now from Johnny Cash’s recording released after his death. The claim in that song is religious: the grave cannot hold the body because resurrection is coming.

Hozier keeps the structure and swaps the reason. The body still refuses to stay buried, but not because of God. It refuses because of a woman. That substitution is the whole song, and it is the same move he makes on “Take Me to Church,” where the vocabulary of worship gets redirected at a person.

What is the second verse about?

Rescue. The narrator describes being found by her after three days of drinking, waking up inside her home, feverish, indifferent to how long he lives. He mentions an empty crib in her room and says she never once asked him about what he had done wrong.

The crib is the hardest image in the song and it is left completely unexplained. It implies a loss she has been through, and it sits in a verse about her taking in a man who is falling apart. The refusal to explain it is deliberate, and it is what gives the song its weight.

Is three days a religious reference?

The number is doing obvious work. Three days is how long the narrator has been drinking before she finds him, and three days is also the interval in the resurrection story that the chorus is already borrowing from.

Hozier has never spelled that out, and the song does not need him to. He built the whole track out of religious material used for secular ends, and the number sits there for anyone who wants it.

What happens in the video?

Couples dance. The clip, directed by Isaac Ravishankara and released in March 2015, puts Hozier and his band on a stage in a dim room while pairs of people in the crowd begin moving, clinging to and lifting each other in choreography that reads as desperate rather than romantic.

Hozier has said they filmed it the day after the 2015 Grammy Awards, where he had been nominated, and that the whole band turned up with what he described as outrageous hangovers.

How does it compare to Take Me to Church?

Same method, opposite temperature. That song uses religious language to attack institutional judgment and it is angry. This one uses religious language to describe someone being saved by another person, and it is warm.

Commercially there is no comparison. “Take Me to Church” reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. This one charted in Ireland and on Billboard’s rock listings and never crossed over. It is still the track most people name when asked for the best thing on the album.

Why it works

Because the exaggeration is total and delivered without irony. Songs promise a lot. This one promises something physically impossible in a completely level voice, over an arrangement borrowed from music made by people doing unbearable work.

That combination is the point. The form was built to make suffering survivable through repetition. Hozier uses it to say that love does the same job, which is a large claim, and the song is arranged so that you believe it for three minutes and forty-nine seconds.
